The Uttarakhand government has entered into an agreement with the National Highway Logistics Management Limited (NHLML) for the construction of ropeways at Kedarnath and Hemkunt Sahib.
Under the partnership, NHLML will hold a 51 percent equity stake, while the state government will retain 49 percent. Notably, 90 percent of the revenue generated will be reinvested to strengthen tourism, transport, and mobility infrastructure across Uttarakhand.
The agreement signed in the presence of Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Ajay Tamta, Uttarakhand Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj, and senior officials.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said the ropeway projects would not only enhance accessibility but also give a global identity to the state’s religious and cultural heritage. He noted that under the Parvatmala Project, two major ropeways have already been approved — a 12.9 km Sonprayag-Kedarnath ropeway costing ₹4,100 crore and a 12.4 km Govindghat-Hemkunt Sahib ropeway worth over ₹2,700 crore.
“These projects will set new milestones in ropeway connectivity, strengthen the state economy, and generate employment opportunities. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, Uttarakhand is witnessing rapid growth in rail, road, and ropeway infrastructure,” Dhami said.
Union Minister Ajay Tamta hailed the agreement as a landmark for ropeway development, saying it would significantly ease pilgrim travel. Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj added that the projects would boost local livelihoods by expanding tourism and creating jobs.
Officials said the ropeways will also contribute to environmental protection by reducing vehicular pressure on sensitive mountain routes while ensuring safer and faster pilgrimages.
