Dr. Tripta Thakur has been appointed as the new Vice Chancellor of Veer Madho Singh Bhandari Uttarakhand Technological University, Dehradun. She is a seasoned academician, power sector expert and currently serving as the Director General of the National Power Training Institute (NPTI). NPTI is an apex training body under the Ministry of Power, Government of India.
Under her leadership, NPTI made a remarkable turn around from a financially strained institution to a profit-making entity within just two years. She introduced key initiatives, including cyber security certification programs for the power sector and foundation courses for newly recruited professionals in Central power utilities and autonomous bodies.
Dr. Thakur also led NPTI to become an institutional partner for the World Bank’s WePOWER initiative, which promotes women’s participation in energy-related projects in South Asia. She positioned NPTI at the forefront of advanced training in areas like AMI, SCADA, and cyber security of power grids.
An alumnus of IIT Kanpur and IIT Delhi, Dr. Thakur holds a PhD and has over 33 years of experience in teaching and research. She previously served as Head and Professor in the Electrical Engineering Department at MANIT-Bhopal.
Her accolades include the Women Technology Innovation Award by the Indian Smart Grid Forum, STEM Women Award 2024 by the Madhya Pradesh Government, and the Shrimati Sushma Swaraj Stree Shakti Engineering Samman (August 2024). She has nearly 100 research publications and has served as a consultant for South Asian electricity market strategies and Indian DISCOMs.
Her appointment is seen as a major step forward for the university’s academic and technical excellence.
