Ahead of the sentencing of Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh in a rape case on Monday, Section 144 of the IPC has been imposed in Champawat district of Kumaon region.
The district magistrate has imposed the section to avoid any violence that might take place after the pronouncement of the verdict.
“In view of the violence that spread in Haryana, Panchkula and Chandigarh, Section 144 is being imposed keeping in mind that some anti-social elements might spread communal and religious violence in the district. More precautions are needed in the plain areas of the district”, said Champawat district magistrate Ahmed Iqbal.
No rallies and meetings will take place in the district when the order is in place. People would not be allowed to travel with sticks, stones, swords, knives, firecrackers, guns, and any weapon. However, weddings and festivals were exempted from the order.
Meanwhile, bus services from Tanakpur to Haryana, Delhi and Punjab have also been temporarily suspended. Buses that run between Tanakpur and Ludhiana, Chandigarh, Amritsar, Shimla and Panchkula would now run till Rudrapur, Moradabad and Ghaziabad till further orders.
