A major tragedy unfolded on Sunday near the Mansa Devi temple in Haridwar when a rumour about high-voltage electric wire suddenly snapped and fell, creating panic among hundreds of devotees gathered on the temple road. The sudden incident triggered a stampede-like situation, leading to chaos and widespread panic in the area.
According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Pramod Singh Dobal, 35 devotees were injured in the accident, out of which six have tragically lost their lives. Several of the injured are in critical condition and have been referred to higher medical centers for advanced treatment. Others are undergoing care at the district hospital in Haridwar.
Police and administrative teams rushed to the spot immediately after receiving information about the incident and launched a swift rescue and relief operation. The injured were quickly evacuated and transported to the nearest hospital. While the situation is currently under control, an atmosphere of fear and anxiety persists in the area.
District Magistrate Mayur Dixit, SSP Pramod Singh Dobal, and other senior officials, along with local public representatives, reached the hospital to oversee the treatment of the injured and review the situation on the ground.
The cause of the wire collapse is currently being investigated. Meanwhile, questions are being raised about the safety and maintenance of electrical infrastructure in high-footfall religious zones.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has expressed deep grief over the loss of lives and has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident. He also announced ex-gratia compensation for the victims’ families and stressed the need for immediate safety audits at key pilgrimage locations across the state.
