Lord jigten sumgon was a great personality; Governor

DAINIK NATION BUREAU

Uttarakhand Governor Dr KK Paul today said that Lord Jigten Sumgon was a great personality and it is our collective good fortune to be able to come together in memory of a person whose great wisdom has had such a profound impact that it is felt for 800 years, and will continue to be felt for many more years.  He expressed this views while participating at the 800th anniversary of the Parinirvana of Lord Jigten Sumgon, the founder of the Drikung Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism.

The Drikung Kagyu came to Dehradun in 1985 with the establishment of the Drikung Kagyu seat outside of Tibet at the Drikung Kagyu Institute.  Since then, it has continued to grow and expand, and now, along with the Songtsen Library, it serves as a center of higher education, thus strengthening the academic focus of our region.

It was very clear that Lord Jigten Sumgön, whom we commemorate now, was an incredibly accomplished and great teacher. “Today, we are celebrating his valuable legacy.”

The entire Drikung Kagyu Lineage around the world was celebrating this memorial occasion. He expressed his pleasure   to be among the gathering where were present His Holiness the Gyalwang Karmapa, His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang, and the President of the Central Tibetan Administration, Dr. Lobsang Sangay. He welcomed all the guests from various parts of the country and the international guests at the commemoration.

The head of the Drikung Kagyu Chetsang Rinpoche emphasizes on environmental protection and sustainability and  his projects have had great benefit in sustaining the Ladakh region, where his ice stupa project has helped to store glacial melt-water to serve as a break against receding glaciers and continue to supply local populations with water useful for farming.

He said  many times, representatives from Ladakh had visited Dehradun to meet Chetsang Rinpoche and plan environmental development measures that benefit not only Ladakh, but also Uttarakhand
