On Monday night, at Azadpur metro station, a CISF jawan had to fire in the air with his service pistol. This was the first instance in Delhi Metro’s 15-year history that a Central Industrial Security Force guard had to resort to firing their weapon.
Why did the CISF jawan fire in the air? The immediate cause, going by CCTV footage of the incident seems to that the guard was trying to bring under control a crowd that was about the assault him.
What happened before, however, isn’t very clear. CCTV footage of the incident begins with a group of a few men attacking a youth. The men are seen punching and kicking the youth. What prompted the attack isn’t known.
In the melee, some other men, possibly bystanders, attempt to come to the youth’s rescue; they are soon joined by a CISF guard.
Senior CISF officials and Delhi Police are looking at the CCTV video of the incident to determine who should be penalized. Sources said a 17-year-old — who allegedly took part in the brawl — has been arrested. Two others seen in the video have been identified. A search is on for the rest.
