Eight dead and three injured in a tragic road accident in Pithoragarh on Tuesday. A Max vehicle plunged into a river near Bhandari village in the Muwani area of Pithoragarh. The accident has claimed the over half dozen lives, while 3 others have sustained serious injuries and are undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital.
According to police officials, the vehicle was en route from Muwani to Bokta when it met with the accident just a few steps short of its destination. The vehicle reportedly lost control on a sharp turn and fell into the river, resulting in a devastating crash.
SSP Rekha Yadav confirmed the incident and informed that the rescue operation was immediately launched by local police, SDRF, and local villagers. While eight people died on the spot, the injured were quickly rescued and shifted to the district hospital in Pithoragarh.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives. Offering condolences to the bereaved families, he instructed the Pithoragarh District Magistrate to ensure all necessary medical assistance and support is provided to the victims and their families.
“The government stands with the affected families in this difficult time,” the Chief Minister said, also directing officials to conduct a detailed inquiry into the cause of the accident and ensure road safety measures are reinforced in the region.
Frequent landslides, narrow roads, and poor visibility often pose challenges in hilly terrains like Pithoragarh. This incident is another grim reminder of the dangers that travelers face on mountain roads.
Local residents have demanded better road safety infrastructure, including proper signage, guardrails, and regular maintenance to prevent such tragedies in the future.
As of now, rescue operations are ongoing, and efforts are being made to recover any remaining passengers or belongings from the accident site.
