Congress Leader Mathura Dutt Joshi Joins BJP, Major Setback for Congress in Uttarakhand

DAINIK NATION BUREAU /DEHRADUN

In a significant political development in Uttarakhand, Congress has suffered a major blow with the resignation of its State Vice President, Mathura Dutt Joshi. Joshi officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the presence of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and State President Mahendra Bhatt at the BJP headquarters in Dehradun. Along with Joshi, several senior Congress leaders and hundreds of their supporters also switched sides, further deepening the crisis within the state Congress unit.

Joshi’s defection comes after a period of intense dissatisfaction within the Congress over ticket distribution for local body elections. His departure was triggered by the cancellation of his wife’s candidacy for the mayoral post, an issue that had previously led him to threaten resignation. Despite efforts by State Congress President Karan Mahara to address growing discontent and placate disgruntled party members, Joshi’s decision to join the BJP reflects the party’s ongoing struggles in maintaining internal cohesion.

The dissatisfaction among Congress candidates is particularly visible in key urban local bodies, including municipal corporations, municipalities, and nagar panchayats, where protests over ticket allocation have intensified. With Joshi’s defection, the BJP gains a prominent face and a large following in the region, strengthening its position ahead of the upcoming elections.

Political analysts view this development as a major setback for Congress, which now faces the dual challenge of managing internal dissent and countering BJP’s growing influence in Uttarakhand. Further defections may follow, escalating the crisis for the party.
