Forest Fires continue to plague Uttarakhand; IAF and officials intensify efforts

As Uttarakhand battles the scourge of forest fires, the situation remains dire with eight new fires reported in the region, as per the latest bulletin by the forest department on Sunday. This escalation comes even as the Indian Air Force (IAF) has been tirelessly engaged in firefighting operations for the second consecutive day, striving to contain the infernos that have engulfed several areas.

Authorities have taken stringent measures to address the crisis, including the cancellation of leaves for all forest department officials until the situation is completely under control. Moreover, stern action has been initiated against 196 cases of suspected arson, with the government filing cases against “anti-social elements” believed to be responsible for igniting the fires.

Of the eight new fires reported within the past 24 hours, the Kumaon region witnessed the majority, exacerbating the already substantial damage incurred since November 1 last year. Over 735.8 hectares of forest land have been ravaged in 606 fires during this period, with significant impacts felt across the Garhwal and Kumaon regions, as well as the administrative wildlife territories.

Efforts to combat the blazes have been multifaceted, with a focus on leveraging aerial resources to suppress the fires. An IAF helicopter has been instrumental in extinguishing fires in various areas, including Ladiyakata and Pines along the Nainital-Bhowali road. The deployment of military assets follows a critical moment on Friday when flames neared sensitive installations like the High Court Colony and an Air Force base, necessitating swift intervention.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, after conducting an aerial survey to assess the extent of the damage, underscored the gravity of the situation and emphasized proactive measures to quell the fires. Coordination between officials, active fire stations, and community involvement has been prioritized to tackle the crisis effectively.

While efforts are underway to bring the situation under control, challenges persist due to heightened dryness resulting from a recent heatwave, particularly in areas bordering Nepal. The lack of significant precipitation exacerbates an already precarious situation, compounded by the absence of winter rains or snowfall.

Despite the daunting task at hand, authorities remain resolute in their commitment to combatting the fires and safeguarding the region’s precious forests. With continued vigilance, collaborative efforts, and swift action against perpetrators, hopes remain high for containing the fires and mitigating further damage to Uttarakhand’s invaluable ecosystems.
