Congress leader Rahul Gandhi criticized the government on Friday, calling the upcoming election a rigged match rather than a fair one. His remarks were made during the release of the party’s manifesto for the polls, emphasizing the importance of this election to save democracy.
Gandhi slammed the Modi government, stating that the Lok Sabha polls are a battle between those seeking to destroy the Constitution and democracy, and those defending them. Speaking at the Congress manifesto launch event, he highlighted that the contest is much closer than portrayed by the media and expressed confidence in the party’s chances of winning the polls.
In response to a question after the manifesto release, Gandhi drew parallels with the ‘India Shining’ campaign of 2004, stating, “Do remember who won that campaign.” He was referring to the BJP-led NDA’s unsuccessful ‘India Shining’ campaign before the 2004 Lok Sabha polls, where the BJP lost and the UPA government was formed.
Gandhi also mentioned that the INDIA bloc is approaching the election from an ideological standpoint, with a decision on the PM candidate to be made after the polls.
The seven-phase Lok Sabha elections are set to commence on April 19.
