Monsoon Session Disrupted for Second Day as opposition Create Uproar Over Dharali Disaster, Panchayat Polls

DAINIK NATION BUREAU/BHARARISAIN

The monsoon session of the Uttarakhand Assembly was once again marred by chaos on its second day, as opposition legislatures created a ruckus in the House over issues related to the Dharali cloudburst disaster and the recently held Panchayat elections.

The uproar began on Tuesday soon after the House assembled, with opposition legislators storming into the well of the House following the singing of Vande Mataram. Despite repeated efforts by Speaker Ritu Khanduri to pacify the agitated members, the opposition remained adamant. The Speaker first adjourned proceedings for 15 minutes, later extending the adjournment till 12:30 pm.

When the House resumed, the opposition once again disrupted proceedings, refusing to allow any business to be conducted. The Speaker was eventually forced to adjourn the House till Wednesday at 11 am. However, the opposition MLAs continued their protest and staged a dharna inside the Vidhan Sabha premises.

On Wednesday, when the session reconvened, Congress MLAs reiterated their demand for immediate discussion on their issues, again preventing the House from functioning.

While the government has expressed readiness to discuss the disaster situation and ongoing redevelopment work in Dharali, leaders of the ruling party alleged that the Congress is more interested in political theatrics than meaningful debate. “The Congress does not want the Dharali disaster and the redevelopment efforts to be properly discussed in the Assembly; their only concern is politics,” said government representatives.

With both sides refusing to back down, the monsoon session is expected to remain turbulent in the days ahead.
