Taking cognizance of a complaint regarding sand-mixed salt being distributed under the Mukhyamantri Namak Poshan Yojana, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami directed officials to conduct an immediate investigation.
Commissioner, Food and Civil Supplies, Chandresh Kumar clarified that the scheme, operational since June 2024, provides 1 kg of iodized salt at just ₹8 to NFSA ration card holders. The supply responsibility has been entrusted to the National Consumer Cooperative Federation of India (NCCF), a central government-nominated agency. The initiative aims to make affordable and quality iodized salt available to poor families, thereby strengthening nutrition levels.
To ensure transparency, the department sought quality test reports from NCCF. Reports from the Defence Food and Research Laboratory, Mysore, and ITC Labs (a NABL-accredited and FSSAI-approved lab) confirmed the salt’s compliance with all food safety standards. Additionally, tests conducted by the State Food and Drug Testing Laboratory, Rudrapur, on August 19, 2025, also verified the salt as refined, safe, and fully compliant with FSSAI norms.
The Commissioner further informed that departmental teams will soon visit the manufacturer’s factory to review quality control processes. Regular lab testing of salt samples will also continue to ensure standards are consistently maintained.
Currently, the Food Department has reaffirmed that only full-quality iodized salt is being distributed under the scheme.
