A cloudburst late Friday night in Toonri Gadera of Tharali tehsil, Chamoli district, triggered massive debris flow into Tharali market and adjoining areas, leading to widespread damage. A young woman lost her life after being buried under debris, while one person has been reported missing.
Several houses, including the Sub-Divisional Magistrate’s residence, were damaged, shops were inundated with mud and rubble, and multiple vehicles were buried under debris. The Karnaprayag–Gwaldam road has also suffered damage at several points due to heavy rains, disrupting connectivity. Restoration work is being carried out on priority to reopen the route.
On receiving information, teams from the District Disaster Response Force (DDRF) rushed to the spot and began rescue and relief operations. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are also en route to the affected site. Police and disaster management teams are actively engaged in relief efforts.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed deep grief over the loss of life and prayed for the safety of the missing person. He immediately directed the police, disaster management authorities, and district administration to expedite rescue operations. The Chief Minister also spoke to local public representatives, seeking detailed information about the damage and urging their cooperation in the ongoing operations.
CM Dhami further appealed to the local MLA to remain on the spot and physically monitor the relief and rescue work, assuring the people of Chamoli that the government is committed to providing all possible assistance to the affected families.
