A newly constructed Bailey Bridge at Kalgadi near Pabau on the Buakhal–Dhumakot–Ramnagar National Highway has been opened for small vehicle movement. The bridge re-establishes direct road connectivity between several blocks of Pauri district, including Paithani, Thalisain, Chakisain, Tripalisain, Bharsar, Bironkhal and Dhumakot, with the district headquarters, as well as with Ramnagar in Kumaon division.
The 45-metre span Bailey bridge, constructed by the Public Works Department (National Highway Section) Dhumakot under the leadership of District Magistrate Swati S. Bhadoria, was completed in record time after the old 1970-built bridge collapsed due to heavy rains on August 6. The collapse had left multiple areas completely cut off, severely impacting travel and supply chains.
In line with the directions issued by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, who had visited the affected site himself, the construction work was initiated immediately and completed on war footing. The bridge was successfully load-tested on Tuesday night by passing departmental vehicles before being partially opened for traffic.
PWD officials confirmed that while the bridge has been opened for small vehicles from Wednesday, it will be ready for heavy vehicle movement within five days.
District Magistrate Bhadoria said the bridge is more than just a transport facility—it is the “lifeline of the mountain.” She credited teamwork, prompt decision-making and public cooperation for making the rapid completion possible. She further directed the PWD to ensure both quality and speed in making the bridge fully operational for heavy traffic at the earliest.
The reopening of the highway is expected to ease the hardships of local residents and revive economic activity in the region.
