In a tragic road accident on Thursday afternoon, a vehicle fell into a deep gorge near Guptkashi. In which driver died on the spot. The accident occurred around 2:35 p.m., approximately 200 meters behind Doliya Devi, as the vehicle was en route from Phata to Guptkashi.
According to initial reports, the driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle. He died on the spot due to the severity of the fall and impact. Local authorities confirmed that the vehicle veered off the road and plunged into a steep gorge under circumstances that are yet to be fully understood.
Upon receiving the information, multiple emergency response teams, including the 108 Ambulance Service, National Highway (NH) maintenance staff, SDRF Sonprayag, and DDRF Ukhimath, were rushed to the accident site. Rescue personnel acted swiftly, launching search and rescue operations in the difficult mountainous terrain. After considerable effort, the body of the deceased driver was recovered from the gorge and transported to a nearby hospital for further formalities.
Eyewitnesses and local residents expressed shock over the incident and called for improved safety measures along the stretch of road, which is known for sharp turns and steep slopes. Authorities have not yet identified the cause of the accident, but a technical fault or driver error is suspected. A detailed investigation is underway.
This tragic incident once again highlights the dangers of driving on narrow and winding roads in Uttarakhand’s hilly regions. Officials have urged drivers to exercise extreme caution, especially during the Char Dham Yatra season when traffic increases significantly.
The identity of the deceased driver is yet to be officially released, pending notification of his family. Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
