In a bid to enhance mobile connectivity Rudraprayag district administration has launched a free Wi-Fi service in Kedarpuri for devotees visiting Shri Kedarnath Dham. It has become operational after a successful trial on Saturday and dedicated to the pilgrims. In reciprocation Pilgrims have expressed thanks to the state government and district Administration too.

The initiative has been implemented under the guidance of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and District Magistrate Dr. Saurabh Gaharwar. Alongside this, Rudraprayag has made history by becoming the first district in India to establish its own independent mobile communication network — the “District Disaster Resource Network.”

Designed to function not only during disasters but also in any emergency situation, the network supports mobile data, voice calling, and high-quality CCTV transmission, ensuring seamless communication in this disaster-sensitive region.

Chief Development Officer Dr. G.S. Khati informed that to access the free WiFi, users must connect to the network via WiFi settings, register their mobile number, and enter an OTP received via SMS. Each session provides high-speed internet access for 30 minutes.

The decision to develop an independent network stems from the severe communication breakdown during the July 2024 disaster on the Kedarnath route. At that time, while other networks failed, the district’s private system proved vital for stranded pilgrims, workers, and rescue teams, enabling critical contact and aiding in relief operations.

With the integration of digital infrastructure into religious tourism, Rudraprayag continues to set new benchmarks in disaster preparedness and pilgrim convenience, reaffirming its commitment to making the Chardham Yatra safer and more accessible for all.
