The Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, took swift action from the outset in the Ankita Bhandari murder case. Demonstrating unwavering support for Ankita’s family, the government ensured that all three accused — Pulkit Arya, Saurabh Bhaskar, and Ankit Gupta — were arrested and jailed within 24 hours of the incident. They have remained in custody ever since.
To ensure a fair and swift investigation, the state government formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the leadership of IPS officer P. Renuka Devi, known for her integrity and efficiency. The SIT collected extensive evidence, resulting in a comprehensive 500-page charge sheet that included the statements of 100 witnesses.
On the family’s repeated demands, the government changed the public prosecutor three times to strengthen the case in court. Legal proceedings were pursued aggressively, and as a result, the court rejected every bail plea submitted by the accused. In addition, the government registered a case under the Gangster Act against the culprits, further tightening the noose around them.
Demonstrating unwavering support, Chief Minister Dhami and his cabinet provided ₹25 lakh as financial aid to Ankita’s family. Moreover, in a bid to ensure the family’s financial stability and honor their loss, government jobs were given to both Ankita’s father and brother.
The government’s swift, sensitive, and firm response to the tragedy has reinforced public trust in the justice system and highlighted its resolve to ensure that no victim is denied justice. As the court has now convicted all three accused, the government’s efforts have played a pivotal role in reaching this crucial milestone in the fight for justice for Ankita.
