A major Chopper accident averted at Sri Kedarnath Dham on Saturday. As per official, a Sanjeevani heli ambulance, deployed to rescue a critically ill devotee, made an emergency landing due to a technical fault. Thanks to the the pilot, the chopper landed safely and all occupants including a doctor and nursing staff from AIIMS Rishikesh are evacuated safely.
According to officials, the helicopter was on a medical emergency mission to airlift a female devotee who had experienced severe breathing difficulties during her visit to Kedarnath. The heli ambulance was carrying a medical team from AIIMS Rishikesh, comprising a doctor, a nurse, and the pilot. As the chopper approached the main helipad at Kedarnath, the pilot detected a technical malfunction.
Realising the potential danger, the pilot skillfully diverted the helicopter to a flat surface just short of the designated landing area. During the emergency landing, the tail rotor of the helicopter broke, but the controlled landing prevented any injuries or further damage.
Rahul Chaubey, District Tourism Development Officer and Nodal Officer for Heli Services, confirmed the incident and praised the pilot’s prompt response. “A major tragedy was prevented due to the timely action taken by the pilot. The entire crew, including the AIIMS medical team, is safe,” he stated.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has been informed and will conduct a detailed investigation into the technical fault. The helicopter will remain grounded until a full assessment is completed.
The incident has raised concerns about air safety protocols in the high-altitude region, especially during the ongoing Char Dham Yatra, when heli services are in high demand. Authorities are expected to review safety checks and maintenance standards following this close call.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has been briefed about the incident and directed authorities to ensure the safety of all pilgrims and crew. He also emphasized the need for a thorough review of aviation safety protocols in the Kedarnath region, which sees high helicopter traffic during the Char Dham Yatra season.
