In one of the deadliest attacks on civilians in Jammu and Kashmir in recent years, at least 26 people, including two foreign tourists, were killed when heavily armed terrorists opened fire in the picturesque Baisaran meadows of Pahalgam on Tuesday afternoon.
According to official sources, the attack took place around 3:45 PM in the upper reaches of Pahalgam, a popular tourist destination in Anantnag district. The victims were mostly tourists and local guides who had trekked to the meadows, often referred to as “Mini Switzerland.” Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as gunshots rang out across the valley, sending people running for cover.
Security forces rushed to the spot and launched a massive cordon-and-search operation to track down the attackers. While no group has officially claimed responsibility for the attack yet, officials suspect the involvement of foreign militants operating in south Kashmir.
This marks the first major terrorist strike targeting civilians in the Valley since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. The incident has triggered shock and condemnation across the nation.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed deep grief over the incident and assured strict action against the perpetrators. Security in and around Pahalgam and other tourist zones has been tightened. Officials have also temporarily suspended trekking routes and tourist activities in the region.
The tragic incident comes at a time when Kashmir was witnessing a steady revival of tourism and peace. Tuesday’s attack has not only shaken public confidence but also raised fresh concerns about the resurgence of terrorism in the Valley. Authorities have urged citizens to remain alert, and security agencies are on high alert to prevent any further violence.
