Uttarakhand Cabinet Minister Premchand Aggarwal has resigned from his cabinet post. He has submitted his resignation to Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. His departure has stirred discussions across the state. It has widen the rift between the hill (Pahad) and plain (Maidan) regions of Uttarakhand.
Before resigning, Aggarwal made a poignant visit to Rampur Tiraha, Muzaffarnagar, the site of a brutal police crackdown during the Uttarakhand movement in 1992. The tragic incident, in which several protestors, including women, were assaulted, remains a painful memory in the state’s history. His visit to the site was seen as a symbolic act, drawing attention to the persistent socio-political challenges in Uttarakhand.
At a press conference following his visit, Aggarwal voiced deep concerns over the increasing divide between Pahad and Maidan. “I cannot bear to see the growing rift between these two regions. People are trying to vitiate the atmosphere, and I do not wish to be a part of it,” he stated. His resignation has further fueled debates on Uttarakhand’s identity and the tensions between different regions.
The situation took a turn during the governor’s address in the state assembly when Aggarwal, as the Parliamentary Affairs Minister, responded to opposition queries. Some members of the Vidhan Sabha made sarcastic remarks about him, which he immediately took note of. Aggarwal insisted that the issue be debated in the house first, but the matter continued to escalate. Over the following days, tensions within the assembly only worsened, ultimately leading to his decision to step down.
Adding to the controversy, renowned folk singer Narendra Singh Negi’s viral Holi song, Mat Maro Prem Lal Pichkari, intensified the ongoing discord. Negi, known for his politically charged lyrics, has a history of influencing Uttarakhand’s political landscape. In 2007, one of his songs played a role in destabilizing the government led by former Chief Minister Narayan Dutt Tiwari. His latest song has once again struck a chord with the public, further stoking regional debates.
Aggarwal’s resignation is expected to have a considerable impact on the state’s governance and upcoming elections. While the ruling party has yet to make an official statement, political analysts believe his move will reshape Uttarakhand’s political discourse in the coming months. Meanwhile, his departure has reignited conversations about regional unity and the future of Uttarakhand’s governance.
