Pithoragarh’s Pokhari village in Kumaon is renowned for its unique Holi celebrations, deeply rooted in musical traditions. The Holi of Tehsil Gangolihat holds special significance, reaching its peak on Ashtami with Chir Bandhan in the sacred court of Maa Mahakali. This occasion witnesses a homecoming of migrant Gangoli residents, uniting them in festive spirit.

Pokhari’s Khadi Holi stands out for its mesmerizing rendition in Raga Pushkari, a melody cherished across the country. The festival begins on Rangbhari Ekadashi with Chir Bandhan, followed by Nishan Bandhan, symbolizing the divine love of Radha-Krishna. The entire village then gathers at Maa Chandika Devi Temple, where Holi singing commences with the goddess’s blessings.

The daily routine of Holi revelers is a rhythmic journey through various ragas. From Samay Bandhan Baithaki Holi, featuring diverse classical ragas, to Madmast Holi in Bhairavi Raga, played from 10 AM to 1 PM, the village resonates with soulful music. The afternoon comes alive again with Khadi Holi, where villagers immerse themselves in colors and dance. Women actively participate, adding charm through Raga Banjara, Baithaki Holi, and captivating dance performances.

Despite increasing migration, villagers proudly uphold their heritage, making Holi in Pokhari an unparalleled cultural spectacle. This festival, blending devotion, music, and colors, continues to strengthen community bonds, ensuring that Kumaon’s rich legacy remains alive for generations.
