Despite the freezing temperatures and frequent snowfall in Uttarakhand, enthusiasm for the Winter Chardham Yatra remains high among devotees. As of January 4, a total of 17,479 pilgrims have visited the four winter shrines. Omkareshwar Temple in Ukhimath, the winter seat of Baba Kedarnath, witnessed the highest footfall with 7,696 devotees. Lord Badrivishal’s winter residence in Pandukeshwar welcomed 6,545 pilgrims. Meanwhile, Mukhba, the winter seat of Gangotri Dham, saw 3,238 visitors, and Kharsali, the winter seat of Yamunotri, recorded 761 devotees.
The yatra gained momentum following its inauguration by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on December 8 at Omkareshwar Temple, where the Panchkedar Winter Yatra began. Baba Kedarnath’s and Lord Madmaheshwar’s palanquins have been placed in Omkareshwar Temple, where they will remain for six months during winter. On January 4, 139 devotees visited Baba Kedar in Ukhimath, 148 pilgrims paid their respects to Lord Badrivishal in Pandukeshwar, 32 visited Mukhba, and 43 reached Kharsali.
To ensure a comfortable and safe experience for devotees, the government has made robust arrangements, including protection against the cold. The Disaster Management Department has issued a special advisory with important tips for pilgrims, emphasizing the need to monitor weather conditions and be prepared for sudden changes. Pilgrims have been urged to carry warm clothing, essential medicines, and nutritious food while avoiding junk food.
In a bid to encourage more visitors, the state government has announced a 25% discount on stays at Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN) hotels during the winter yatra. Additionally, efforts are underway to improve facilities at all winter stay locations, ensuring a memorable experience for devotees.
