Madan Kaushik, urban development minister, Uttarakhand said,”Rishikesh Nagar Palika Parishad has a population 1.21 lakh which is well above the required number. In the plains, a population of over 1 lakh is required to upgrade a municipal council into a municipal corporation and for the hills the required population is 90,000.” Kaushik said, “Kotdwar municipal council has a population of 1.35 lakh, which makes it eligible to become a nagar nigam,” said the minister.
In other decisions, the Trivendra Singh Rawat cabinet also approved a report with 16 suggestions for development of Kedarpuri which was compiled during a meeting reviewed by chief secretary on October 23. The 16 points were prepared after the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Kedarnath on October 20.
“These are recommendations which will help in coordinating projects being carried out at Kedarpuri. Among the major points included are formation of a board to oversee reconstruction, selection of a development model, selection of an architect, setting up of an office in Guptkashi and Sonprayag and creating a high-power committee headed by chief secretary to take stock of the construction work,” said Kaushik..
