Priyanka and Rahul Gandhi may contest LS election from Rae Bareli and Amethi

Congress Leaders Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Rahul Gandhi Likely to contest Lok Sabha elections 2024 from Rae Bareli and Amethi Respectively. Sources reveal that a final decision on their candidature will be made after April 26, with nominations potentially being filed next week, coinciding with Phase 2 of the elections. Rahul Gandhi’s contested seat, Wayanad, is scheduled for polling in this phase, where he faces BJP’s Smriti Irani, who previously defeated him in Amethi during the 2019 elections.

In an electoral pact between the Samajwadi Party and Congress in Uttar Pradesh, Congress will contest 17 seats while the Samajwadi Party will contest the remaining 63. Beyond their traditional strongholds of Rae Bareli and Amethi, Congress is also vying for Varanasi, Ghaziabad, and Kanpur.

Earlier speculations of a possible ticket for Robert Vadra, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s husband, arose with posters featuring him outside the party’s office in Amethi’s Gauriganj area. However, Congress appears committed to fielding the Gandhi siblings to contest for every seat they are vying for.

The constituencies of Amethi and Rae Bareli are slated for voting in the fifth phase of Lok Sabha elections on May 20. However, Rahul Gandhi faces a formidable challenge in Amethi from Union Minister Smriti Irani, who has been actively campaigning in the region and questioning his loyalty to the constituency.

Rae Bareli, historically a Congress stronghold since 1960, has been represented by notable figures like Feroze Gandhi and Indira Gandhi. With Sonia Gandhi transitioning to the upper house, the party is likely to nominate Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who currently serves as a general secretary within the party.
