Delhi HC rejects PIL seeking removal of Arvind Kejriwal as Chief Minister

Delhi High Court rejects PIL Seeking Arvind Kejriwal’s removal as Chief Minister after his arrest. The Delhi High Court has declined to hear a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking the removal of Arvind Kejriwal from his position as Chief Minister following his arrest in the excise policy case.

Arvind Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with an alleged money laundering case related to the Delhi excise policy. The Rouse Avenue Court in Delhi had remanded the AAP leader to judicial custody until April 15.

Kejriwal’s arrest on March 21 by the Enforcement Directorate was based on allegations related to the excise policy case, and he has spent 10 days in ED custody as directed by the court. The agency had previously stated that Kejriwal was directly involved in the formulation of the excise policy.

“Arvind Kejriwal has also been deeply involved in the entire conspiracy of the Delhi liquor scam, where the policy was drafted and implemented to favor certain private individuals for receiving kickbacks,” the central agency was quoted as saying by PTI in its remand report.

Kejriwal’s arrest by the central agency marked the first instance in independent India where a serving Chief Minister was taken into custody. This action came after Kejriwal had skipped multiple summonses by the investigation agency, totaling nine, which he called “illegal.”

The case revolves around alleged irregularities and money laundering in the framing and implementation of the Delhi Excise Policy 2022, which was subsequently annulled.

While Kejriwal was not initially named in the FIRs filed by the ED or the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the Delhi excise policy case, his name surfaced in the ED’s chargesheet. The agency alleged that he had a video call with one of the main accused, Sameer Mahendru, and instructed him to continue working with co-accused and AAP communications-in-charge Vijay Nair.

Nair was among the first individuals arrested by the CBI in 2022 in connection with the case. Following this, former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh were also arrested in connection with the case.
