More than 20 person trapped in inundated tunnel in chamoli, Uttarakhand on Thursday. A massive multi-agency search and rescue operation is underway in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district after a sudden influx of water and debris flooded an under-construction THDC tunnel.

The incident occurred around 7:05 PM at the Mayapur (Pipalkoti) project site, where construction work was being executed by the Hindustan Construction Company (HCC). An estimated 22 people were in the vicinity when slush and water swept into the shaft. Preliminary reports says 13 workers were rescued from the flooded section so far.

Rescue & Response Operations

  • Evacuation Progress: First responders launched an immediate search operation, successfully pulling 13 workers to safety so far. Operations are ongoing to reach those still trapped.

  • Government Mandate: Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami directed senior officials to remain at the site and ensure rescue efforts are carried out on a war footing.

  • On-Site Operations: Ground-level emergency teams from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), District Industrial Response Force (DIRF), and local police are leading initial clearing efforts.

  • Reinforcements Mobilized: Specialized teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), and the Indian Army have been dispatched to scale up the operation.
