The Uttarayani Kauthik Festival-2026 began amid the chanting of Vedic Swasti Vachan mantras and the blowing of conch shells, marking an auspicious start to the four-day cultural event.
The inaugural ceremony was led by Geeta Dhami, convener and founder trustee of the Seva Sankalp Foundation, who formally inaugurated the festival. The event’s objective is to showcase the vibrant folk culture, traditions, and heritage of Uttarakhand, while connecting cultural preservation with social and economic prosperity.
A major attraction of the opening day was the grand procession and Kalash Yatra, which presented a magnificent glimpse of Uttarakhand’s rich folk traditions. The procession was led by Smt. Geeta Dhami, who carried the Kalash (sacred pot), symbolizing cultural continuity and spiritual energy.
Starting from Lansdowne Chowk, the procession passed through Darshan Lal Chowk, Ghantaghar, Gandhi Park, and Kanak Chowk, before returning to the Parade Ground. It was led by a representation of Nyankari Golju, adding a strong spiritual and cultural dimension to the event.
Participants dressed in traditional attire and accompanied by folk musical instruments created a deeply festive and devotional atmosphere. Enthralling performances of Chholiya dance, Jaunsari dance, and Garhwali, Kumaoni, Gorkhali, and Punjabi folk dances captivated onlookers. The rhythmic beats of traditional instruments and energetic performances by folk artists filled the city with celebration and cultural pride.
As the procession moved through the main roads, it was warmly welcomed by local residents, with thousands of people joining and witnessing the spectacle, reflecting widespread public enthusiasm for the festival.
Addressing the gathering, Geeta Dhami said that the Uttarayani Kauthik Festival is a significant initiative to preserve Uttarakhand’s rich cultural heritage and to connect the new generation with their roots. She stated that the theme “From Culture to Prosperity” emphasizes development while safeguarding traditional values.
She further informed that the festival features a rich blend of folk art, traditional cuisine, handicrafts, cultural performances, and social activities. Artists, artisans, and cultural troupes from across the state are actively participating. Dhami said the Foundation’s vision is to give a new identity to Uttarakhand’s culture and to take its folk traditions to every section of society.
The Uttarayani Kauthik Festival-2026 will continue at the Parade Ground over the coming days with a series of cultural programs, exhibitions, and performances celebrating the soul of Uttarakhand.
