Uttarakhand is set to emerge as a major global hub for trekking and hiking with the development of mountain trails, following a key announcement made by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman during the presentation of the Union Budget 2026-27 in the Lok Sabha on Sunday.

The initiative aims to promote eco-friendly adventure tourism by creating robust and safe infrastructure across the state’s mountainous regions, while ensuring protection of the fragile Himalayan ecosystem. The move is being seen as a milestone step towards positioning Uttarakhand prominently on the world trekking map.

According to the Budget announcement, the central government will focus on the comprehensive development of trekking routes, cultural sites, and associated facilities. Emphasis will be laid on sustainability, environmental conservation, and responsible tourism practices to balance economic growth with ecological preservation.

The development of organized trekking trails is expected to significantly boost adventure tourism in the state. It will also provide a major economic push to local communities involved in trekking, hospitality, guiding services, and allied sectors. Officials said the initiative is likely to generate new employment opportunities, particularly for the youth in remote and hilly areas.

In addition, the project will include the creation of safe and well-marked infrastructure to cater to both experienced trekkers and beginners, enhancing overall safety and accessibility.

With its rich natural landscapes, diverse trails, and cultural heritage, Uttarakhand holds immense potential for sustainable adventure tourism. The central government’s initiative is expected to unlock this potential, strengthening the state’s economy while preserving its unique environment.
