To motivate people to do water conservation, NITI Aayog organized a workshop here in Dehradun on Monday. The workshop was attended by the Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, policymakers and environmental experts. The discussions focus on strategies to revive water sources and combat climate change, reinforce Uttarakhand’s role in India’s water security.

During the event, NITI Aayog highlighted the achievements of the Amrit Sarovar Yojana, under which 1,092 Amrit Sarovars have been constructed across the country to rejuvenate water bodies. Speaking at the workshop, CM Dhami emphasized the importance of river-linking projects in Uttarakhand. “I had requested in the NITI Aayog meeting to transfer the Pinder River, which originates from glaciers, to Kosi, Gagas, Gomti, and Garud rivers under the river linking scheme. This initiative, if implemented, will provide drinking and irrigation water to several districts,” he stated.

Uttarakhand, often called the Water Tower of India, is home to over 1,000 glaciers and numerous rivers that sustain millions of lives. The state is actively working to maintain a balance between ecology and economy under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. Notably, Uttarakhand is the first state to implement GEP (Gross Environmental Product), further reinforcing its commitment to sustainable development.

To strengthen water conservation efforts, the State Authority for Revitalization of Aquifers (SARA) has identified 5,500 groundwater sources and 2,292 tributary rivers, with active restoration projects underway. The workshop is expected to accelerate conservation initiatives across the Indian Himalayan region, ensuring long-term sustainability of rivers, canals, and streams.

This event marked a crucial step in shaping national strategies for water management, securing Uttarakhand’s role as a leader in climate resilience and water conservation.
