Cop arrested by the Police

On Monday night, two miscreants barged into former SMO Rajesh Goyal’s house in Nabha and attacked him with a sharp-edged weapon. They overpowered his wife, talking on the phone, and minutes later decamped with cash and ornaments. They were later nabbed. The mastermind turned out to be a constable with the Intelligence wing of Punjab Police.

A CIA team arrested Sangrur Constable Guriqbal Singh and accomplices Satgur Singh, Laddi Dass and Ranjit Singh. The latter ran an ‘akhara’ that was frequented by Guriqbal. “They struck a friendship and with Guriqbal all too familiar with the police functioning, decided to get rich. After the Nabha robbery, Guriqbal stopped using his cellphone and instructed his accomplices to do likewise,” Patiala SSP Mandeep Singh Sidhu said.

Recruited in 2010, Guriqbal was posted with the Crime Investigation Agency in Sangrur for a few years. A graduate specialising in mobile technology, he was picked by the Intelligence wing and posted in Chandigarh. He was given the task of tracking down gangsters, sources said.

What has startled the top brass is that Guriqbal was given a posting usually handled by an SI-level officer. Apprehending he may have leaked crucial information to gangsters, he is being grilled by the CIA, Patiala, said Nabha Kotwali SHO Sukhraj Singh.

Another officer claimed Guriqbal had “very sensitive information on some gangsters and it will be dangerous to send him to jail where he will have access to gangsters he had been keeping tabs on”. THE TRIBUNE
