Women appreciates CM decision to death penalty to rape accused

More than 300 women thanked Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat for his decision to bring in a law proposing death penalty to accused of raping minor girls at his official residence on Saturday.

In his address Chief Minister Rawat said that Uttarakhand has a separate identity of  ‘Dev Bhoomi’ in the country and in the world and there is different emotion for us. For such heinous crime against minor girls, death penalty is the least for the accused in Uttarakhand and that is why we have decided to bring in a law proposing death penalty for those accused of raping minor girls. A total of 38947 rape cases were registered in the entire country in 2016, out of which charge sheets were filed in 33628 cases. The trials was completed in 18552 cases and convictions were awarded in 4739 cases. He said that death penalty is the minimum punishment for heinous crime of rape against minor girls. The fear of death amongst the accused of such crime is the aim of this law.  He said that there is need for mothers to be strong as strong mothers will result in strong families. He said that we have to prepare our girls to be strong to face such situations.

Chief Minister said that during these modern time it is not good to wait for the jobs and the youth should work for self-employment. He said that the state government has started a small beginning in this regard. The Women Self-Help Groups are preparing ‘Dev Bhog Prasad’ to sell at various temples. “Dev Bhog Prasad’ worth Rs. 1.25 crore was sold at Kedarnath temple. A total of 110 women were given training to make LED bulbs and our sisters have shown excellent results. The products made by them are cheap and durable while other products are guaranteed for only one year, the products made by women have two years’ guarantee.

State government has prepared a “Pirul policy” and women groups are given priority. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has started “Ayushmaan Bharat Yojna” in which 40 per cent of the population of the country is given health cover. He said that the state government has decided to give health coverage to every citizen of the state under this scheme and they can get treatment in any hospital.

Chief Minister said that due to lack of information the benefits of many welfare schemes are not reaching the eligible persons. He said that it should be our efforts that information about such schemes should be provided to the eligible persons to help them.

The women thanked the Chief Minister on behalf of women of the entire state for bringing in a law proposing death penalty for accused of rape of minor girls.
