Environment summit to make uttarakhand free from plastic

The Two day CII – UCOST 9th Environment Summit focusing on Eco system service and plastic waste free Uttarakhand concluded today on a successful note.

Dr S S Negi Vice Chairman, Uttarakhand Rural Development & Migration Commission while delivering his valedictory session as Guest of Honour said that it is the duty of the society to make their surroundings plastic waste free and people should encourage their neighbours, children’s to not to use single use plastic products and other non-bio degradable products. Dr Negi Shared how our neighbouring state Himachal Pradesh has taken a lead in imposing a ban on the use of plastic carry bags and reduce the use of plastic items, created broad based environmental awareness and developed an institutional mechanism for plastic waste management.

He stressed that sustainable plastic waste management can only be accomplished if there is a political will, civil and social ownership, awareness and effective monitoring and evaluation systems in place.

The third session of the summit held today focused on Plastic waste free Uttarakhand and was moderated by Mr Rakesh Aggarwal, Past Chairman, CII Uttarakhand State Council. During the session the experts Dr Sanat Kumar, Sr Scientist and Head of Area, Wax Rheology Area (Separation Process Division) CSIR – Indian Institute of Petroleum, shared IIPs work on converting waste plastic fuel & aromatics. Mr Vipin Kumar notable expert in the field of Solid Waste Management shared his views on Plastic waste management and Mr Vipul Arora, Manager Operations, ITC Limited shared details about well-being out of waste (WOW) which is ITCs initiative on Solid waste Management.

Dr Rajendra Dobhal, Director General UCOST mentioned that the summit went off well with good deliberation’s over two days with resources persons from industry & institutions. He expressed that such summits helps in changing the mind-set of people & educate them on various issues and also create a platform for knowledge sharing and networking.

Dr Vijay Dhasmana, Chairman, CII Uttarakhand State Council, said that till the time people don’t consider public places, utilities, infrastructure and cities as their own, cleanliness and waste creation will not end.
Dr S Farooq, Past Chairman, CII Uttarakhand State Council in his address expressed that our natural resources are our jewels and we must take measures towards conservation. He further added that proper and regular awareness is required amongst society for conservation and limiting use of plastics.

The day 2 of the summit was well attended by over 100 delegates from Industry, Institutions, Academia, NGO’s and experts in the area of Environment and addressed by 10 experts.
