Designer eggs for healthy heart

“Designer eggs” rich in Omega 3 can prove the best alternative to fish, the only rich source of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Developed by Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) here for research purposes, these eggs will be laid by hens fed on chia seeds, hemp seeds and flex seeds.

“These seeds are a good source of Omega 3 and when given simultaneously to hens result in eggs that are rich in Omega 3,” explained Dr JPS Gill, Director of Research, GADVASU.

Dr Madhu Wadhwa, Head, Department of Animal Nutrition Department, said these eggs could help curtail cardio-vascular diseases, were good for the brain and also increased resistance to cancerous growths. “Studies have proven the same,” she stressed.

Dr APS Sethi, senior nutritionist at GADVASU, said the Omega 3-rich eggs produced by the university were not for sale yet. “Whether we will be signing an MoU with a company for the production of these eggs or will transfer the technology is still undecided.” Experts said cholesterol-free eggs, high vitamin-E eggs, harmone-free eggs and antibiotic-free eggs could be produced likewise.
