Five candidates, one each from the BJP, the Congress, Uttarakhand Kranti Dal (UKD), the CPI and an independent filed their nomination papers on the last day for filing of nomination papers for the Tharali (SC) Assembly segment. The seat was declared vacant after sudden demise of sitting MLA Magan Lal Shah. With this nomination party high command has been tried to reap benefit of emotion, which Munni Shah is getting after demise of her husband and Late MLA Magan Lal Shah.
The Election Commission has set May 11 as the date for scrutinizing of the nomination papers, while May 14 is the last date for the withdrawal of nomination papers.
Chamoli Zila Panchayat President and Late MLA Magan Lal Shah’s wife Munni, filed her nomination papers as the BJP candidate in the presence of Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat, state BJP incharge Shyam Jaju and Uttarakhand BJP chief Ajay Bhatt. While Congress candidate Prof Jeet Ram filed his nomination papers in the presence of Leader of the Opposition Indira Hridayesh.
The other candidates including Kasbi Lal Shah from the Uttarakhand Kranti Dal (UKD), Kunwar Ram from the CPI and independent candidate Biri Ram. As per the ECI, the BJP candidate filed four set of nomination papers while the Congress candidate filed three sets of nomination papers.
Later BJP leaders including CM addressed a public rally and conducted road show to bolster the prospects of the BJP candidate Munni Devi. He claimed that we have also linked Himni, a remote village in Chamoli, with Apollo hospital (New Delhi) under the tele medicine project.
Uttarakhand BJP leader got sigh of relief after knowing that rebel leaders Guddu Lal and Balbir Guniyal did not file their nominations as independent candidates. Instead Guddu Lal was present at the meeting addressed by Chief Minister, while Balbir Guniyal reiterated his support for the party. Seeing Guniyal condition state BJP president Ajay Bhatt brought him to Dehradun for advance treatment.
Sources said that the BJP leadership in Uttarakhand has promised them that they would be made chairman or deputy chairman in upcoming political appointments. While former chief minister Harish Rawat has asked that it seems both leaders Guddu and Guniyal have received Rs 15 lakh which is why they did not file their nomination paper.
State Congress president Pritam Singh stressed that Prof Jeet Ram would register a landslide victory in the bypoll. The way a large number of people have turned up for filing of Congress leader’s nomination papers amply proved that people of Uttarakhand were with the Congress. Congress would not only win Tharali bypoll but will also win 2019 Lok Sabha elections in a big way.
