After questioning, the CBI has arrested BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar on Friday late evening. He has been arrested in connection with the alleged rape of a 17-year-old girl.
Meanwhile the Allahabad High Court has directed the CBI to carry out further investigation or re-open the investigation of the original gangrape case registered on June 20, 2017, along with three other cases filed subsequently. It directed the CBI to consider cancelling the bail of all the accused for fair investigation.
Few hours before his arrest, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath assured the people that stringent action will be taken against the guilty. After registering three cases, a CBI team picked the MLA from his house early in the morning and took him to its Lucknow office for questioning.
A CBI team inspected the crime site at Makhi village in Unnao, questioned the rape survivor’s family members, witnesses as well as hospital officials where the girl was admitted after the crime. It arrested the six police personnel earlier suspended in connection with the case. They will be questioned along with the MLA.
The CBI’s first FIR pertains to the alleged rape, in which Sengar and a woman, Shashi Singh, have been named. The second pertains to rioting, in which four locals have been booked, and the alleged killing of the victim’s father in judicial custody. The CBI FIR does not mention the murder charge that was added later by the state police in its FIR.
The third case pertains to allegations against the victim’s father, who was arrested under the Arms Act and put behind bars where he mysteriously died of serious wounds, as per the postmortem report. The girl was allegedly raped by the MLA at his residence on June 4, 2017, when she had gone there to seek a job. Her family moved the court against the MLA in February 2018 after which the victim’s father was booked under the Arms Act on April 3 and put in jail on April 5.
Alleging coercion, the victim attempted self-immolation outside the CM residence on April 8. The following day, her father died in jail.
