Taking cognizance of the suicide of Sukhwant Singh, who allegedly took his life on the intervening night of January 10 and 11 in Haldwani after recording a video naming those he held responsible for forcing him to take the extreme step, the Uttarakhand Police have constituted a five-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) for a comprehensive and impartial probe into the case.
The SIT has been formed on the directions of the Director General of Police (DGP) Deepam Seth and will be headed by Inspector General of Police, STF, Nilesh Anand Bharne. Other members of the SIT include Superintendent of Police Champawat Ajay Ganpati, Circle Officer Tanakpur Vandana Verma, Inspector Diwan Singh Bisht, and Sub-Inspector Manish Khatri.
To ensure free and fair probe, the Police Headquarters (PHQ) has transferred 12 police personnel, including three Sub-Inspectors, one Assistant Sub-Inspector, one Head Constable, and seven Constables, who were earlier suspended, to Chamoli and Rudraprayag districts in the Garhwal Range with immediate effect.
The PHQ has also directed that the videos related to the incident circulating on social media, along with the email complaint sent by the deceased, be thoroughly examined. The complaint reportedly contains serious allegations against certain local individuals as well as officers and personnel of the Udham Singh Nagar district police.
Officials have been instructed to probe all available evidence carefully and to take appropriate legal action strictly in accordance with the law. The constitution of the SIT and the administrative steps taken by the police underline the state police’s commitment to a fair, transparent, and unbiased investigation into the matter.
