The Uttarakhand State Election Commission has approved strict action against police officials in connection with the recent firing incident during the election of the chief and deputy chiefs of Panchayat in Betalghat, Nainital district.
Taking serious cognizance of the matter, the Commission has given its consent to the state government to initiate departmental proceedings against Bhawali Police Officer Pramod Shah. Along with this, Anish Ahmed, Station Incharge of Betalghat Police Station, has been suspended and departmental action has been ordered against him as well.
The decision comes after reports of violence and firing during the Panchayat election process raised questions over law and order arrangements in the area. The Election Commission has underlined that ensuring peaceful and fair elections is the responsibility of the local administration and police, and lapses in duty will not be tolerated.
The state government is expected to carry out further inquiry into the incident while maintaining strict vigil to prevent recurrence of such incidents during the ongoing Panchayat elections.
