Six people lost their lives in a helicopter crash near Gangnani in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand on Wednesday. The helicopter was en route to Harshil, carrying pilgrims visiting the sacred Gangotri Dham, when it crashed under unknown circumstances. They were going to Gangotri from yamunotri.

The district administration confirmed the deaths, adding that rescue and relief operations were immediately launched. The cause of the crash is yet to be determined. According to officials, the chopper was flying in a mountainous region known for unpredictable weather and difficult terrain.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed deep sorrow over the incident. In a statement, he conveyed his condolences to the families of the deceased and instructed the district administration to ensure all necessary medical assistance is provided to any injured passengers. “The loss of lives in this unfortunate incident is deeply saddening. I have directed officials to provide all possible support to the affected families,” said the Chief Minister.

He has also ordered a high-level inquiry to ascertain the exact cause of the crash. Authorities are expected to examine technical records, weather conditions, and the flight path to determine what led to the tragic event.

The incident has caused panic among pilgrims and devotees visiting the Char Dham shrines, especially those planning to travel to Gangotri Dham. Helicopter services are a common mode of transport in this high-altitude region, particularly during the Char Dham Yatra season.

Officials have appealed to the public to remain calm and await further updates as investigations are underway. More details are expected to emerge in the coming days as the enquiry progresses and testimonies from aviation experts and ground staff are collected.
