Haldwani, Uttarakhand: The story of 65-year-old Jeevan Chandra Joshi from Katgharia, Haldwani, is one of sheer determination, talent, and resilience. Despite being physically disabled due to polio since childhood, Joshi has become a beacon of inspiration through his extraordinary artwork using dry pine bark.
Joshi’s remarkable talent recently caught national attention when Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised his work in the “Mann Ki Baat” radio programme. The Prime Minister lauded Joshi’s ability to bring life to inanimate objects found in the mountains and hailed his spirit as an example of self-reliance and creativity.
This heartfelt recognition has filled Jeevan Chandra Joshi with immense pride. “I never imagined that the Prime Minister would talk about my art. This is the biggest moment of my life,” he said with emotion. Following the praise, Nainital MP and former Union Minister Ajay Bhatt visited Joshi’s art centre to personally congratulate him. Bhatt assured him that the government would do everything possible to resolve any challenges he faces in his work.
Joshi is the first person in India to receive a Senior Fellowship from the Ministry of Culture for his work with pine bark. His art, created from the dry outer covering of pine trees—commonly considered waste—has gained admiration both in India and abroad. His work demonstrates how discarded natural resources can be transformed into beautiful creations with imagination and hard work.
Living with a disability never deterred Joshi from pursuing his dreams. With creativity as his strength and nature as his canvas, he continues to inspire many with his journey. His achievements prove that physical limitations are no barrier when met with passion, perseverance, and purpose.
