Former BJP MLA from Dwarahat, Mahesh Negi, has received a clean chit from the ACJM Pancham Court in Dehradun in a rape and intimidation case filed against him. The court, after reviewing the evidence and arguments on May 22, 2025, acquitted Negi of all charges, bringing significant relief to the former legislator.
The case dates back to 2018 when a woman accused Negi of sexual exploitation and claimed he was the father of her daughter. The woman alleged that Negi raped her at multiple locations including Nainital, Delhi, Mussoorie, and Dehradun. She had also demanded a DNA test to establish paternity, but the Uttarakhand High Court stayed the test proceedings.
In response, Negi’s wife, Rita Negi, filed a blackmailing case against the complainant at Nehru Colony police station in August 2020, alleging an attempt to extort ₹5 crore from her husband. Subsequently, on court orders, a rape and intimidation case was registered against Mahesh Negi and his wife in September 2020. However, after investigation, the police filed a closure report in both the rape and blackmailing cases.
With the court’s recent decision in his favour, Mahesh Negi has now initiated a defamation case against the woman, seeking an apology and ₹5 crore as compensation for the damage caused to his reputation and political career.
Negi’s legal counsel, Advocate Chandrashekhar Tiwari, stated that the entire case was a politically motivated conspiracy aimed at tarnishing his client’s image and derailing his career. He added that the Negi side may also challenge the final report filed in the blackmailing case.
The case, which had remained a matter of public debate, now appears to be nearing legal closure.
