In a bid to boost tea cultivation in the hill regions of Uttarakhand, the state cabinet has approved the creation of 11 additional posts in the Uttarakhand Tea Development Board. The decision includes the creation of 4 regular and 7 outsourced positions to strengthen the functioning and expansion efforts of the board.
The Uttarakhand Tea Development Board was established in 2004 with its headquarters in Almora district. It was constituted to promote tea cultivation by ensuring proper financial arrangements, encouraging investments, and facilitating the availability of quality plants. Over the years, the board has played a key role in rejuvenating old tea gardens and developing new plantations across the state’s hilly terrain.
Currently, the board is actively engaged in expanding tea cultivation by reviving abandoned tea gardens, identifying new areas suitable for tea farming, and utilizing wastelands through plantation drives. This has not only opened up avenues for local employment but has also contributed to enhancing the income of farmers. The board also works on land taken on lease from farmers, where it establishes professionally managed tea gardens to increase productivity.
The newly approved posts are expected to further strengthen these efforts and improve the board’s operational efficiency. These positions will support various functions, including research, fieldwork, administration, and on-ground supervision.
With this step, the state government aims to tap into the vast potential of tea development in Uttarakhand’s hill areas, where climate and terrain are favorable for high-quality tea production. The expansion of the Tea Development Board’s workforce is anticipated to enhance local livelihoods, promote sustainable agriculture, and establish Uttarakhand as a notable player in India’s tea industry.
