In a significant move under the Uttarakhand government’s ongoing anti-corruption campaign, the vigilance department on Monday arrested a chief Anganwadi worker in Sitarganj red-handed while accepting a bribe of ₹2,000. The accused, Kamlesh, allegedly demanded the amount as a “convenience fee” from a student in exchange for issuing a certificate required to claim benefits under the Nanda Gora scheme.
Acting swiftly on a complaint received through official channels, the vigilance team laid a trap and apprehended the accused at the moment of the transaction. The arrest highlights the state government’s firm commitment to rooting out corruption at all levels of administration.
Under the direct instructions of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, Uttarakhand has been running a focused campaign against corruption, with a policy of zero tolerance toward bribery and misuse of power. Over the past three years, more than 80 individuals have been caught red-handed while taking bribes, and several others have been detained in connection with corruption cases.
This intensified crackdown marks the first time such widespread action has been taken in the state since its formation. Officials across departments, regardless of rank or political influence, have come under scrutiny. A dedicated vigilance cell has been activated, and a toll-free number (1064) along with a mobile application has been launched to encourage citizens to report corruption anonymously and easily.
Chief Minister Dhami has reiterated his stance that no one involved in corrupt practices will be spared. The government’s consistent action sends a strong message that accountability and transparency remain at the core of governance in Uttarakhand.
The vigilance department has confirmed that further investigation is underway in the Sitarganj case.
