Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has participated in the breakthrough ceremony of the Silkyara Tunnel, marking a significant milestone for Uttarakhand. This tunnel, crucial for the Char Dham Yatra, witnessed a major crisis in 2023 when 41 workers were trapped inside for 17 days. Under the direct guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the leadership of Chief Minister Dhami, a record-breaking rescue operation was conducted, safely rescuing all the trapped workers.
The Silkyara Tunnel, a double-lane project costing around ₹853 crore, spans 4.531 km. Once completed, it will reduce the distance between Gangotri and Yamunotri Dhams by 26 km, improving travel convenience and saving time for pilgrims. This infrastructure boost is expected to enhance tourism, employment opportunities, and business prospects in the region, contributing to the local economy.
On this occasion, the Chief Minister congratulated all engineers, experts, and workers associated with the project. He said this achievement was not just an engineering success but a testament to human spirit, faith, and teamwork. He expressed gratitude to the rescue teams, including NDRF, SDRF, and rat miners, for their tireless efforts.
The Chief Minister also visited the Baba Baukhnag Temple, participating in its Pran Pratishtha program, bringing offerings from Dehradun. He fulfilled his vow made during the rescue operation by announcing that the Silkyara Tunnel would be named after Baba Baukhnag.
Additionally, he declared the upgradation of the Primary Health Center Genwala-Brahmakhal to a Community Health Center, development of Baukhnag Tibba as a tourist destination, and construction of a helipad near Syalna.
Union Minister of State Ajay Tamta, MLAs, NHIDCL officials, and local representatives were present during the event, marking a proud and emotional day for Uttarakhand.
