Wildlife Terror in Guptkashi: Monkeys Attack Local, Villagers Seek Government Help

DNB/Guptkashi: Residents of Uttarakhand’s mountain regions are facing increasing challenges due to frequent wildlife attacks. While people avoid going out at night because of the fear of leopards and wild boars, the situation has worsened as wild animals, particularly monkeys, have made it unsafe to leave homes even during the day.

In a recent incident, Madan Semwal, a young man from Andrawadi village on Jakholi Road, was severely injured by a group of monkeys while sitting outside his house. He was rushed to the Government Hospital in Guptkashi, where he received first aid, and his wounds were stitched.

The continuous attacks by wild animals have forced many residents to migrate from the village. Those who remain live in fear, and monkey attacks have become a frequent occurrence. The monkey menace is so severe that villagers have stopped sowing crops, as monkeys and wild boars frequently destroy them.

Andrawadi village, once considered fertile, now faces declining agricultural activity as most fields lie barren due to the wildlife threat. Only a few fields close to the village are cultivated, but even there, villagers rarely harvest anything due to the constant raids by pigs and monkeys. This is not an isolated issue but one affecting many villages across the region.

Previously, a similar case of monkey terror was reported to the CM Helpline, and the Forest Department had assured villagers that the troublesome monkeys would be captured. However, no action has been taken. Frustrated, the villagers have now turned to Forest Minister Subodh Uniyal, requesting immediate relief from the monkey menace and financial assistance for Madan Semwal’s treatment, who was badly injured in the recent attack.

The villagers hope the government will address this escalating problem and provide a solution to the wildlife threats in their area.
