Doon Kidney scam’s kingpin arrested by police

In a major breakthrough in the kidney scam Dehradun police have arrested its kingpin Dr Amit Kumar along with two other accused from Haryana on Saturday while they were planning to go to Nepal. Others arrested are Dr Jeevan and a nurse Sarla.  However,  a driver Pradeep alias Billu, another accused of the case, was arrested from Raiwala and his car was impounded. Police have recovered five mobile phones, Rs 33.73 lakh in cash and three cars from their possession, said Dehradun SSP Nivedita Kukreti while addressing to media here in Dehradun on Saturday.

SSP said that acting on tip-off police raided a house in Panchkula, Haryana but it was found deserted.  Based on other sources, police reached a hotel at sector 18 in Panchkula where we arrested Dr Amit Kumar, Dr Jeevan and Sarla. During interrogation, the accused revealed that they were planning to go to Nepal.

They confessed, Gangotri Charitable Hospital under Uttranchal Dental College was being used as the centre of the kidney removal and transplant following  an understanding reached with the hospital management through  Ashok Tyagi and Rajeev Choudhary. “ Gangotri Hospital was being looked after by Rajeev Choudhary and his wife Anupama. To complete the transplant, money was received from the receivers and other necessary materials were purchased from the same. Staffs were employed at the operation theatre to complete the kidney removal and transplant processes. The accused confessed that they were in contact with the agents operating across the country and abroad who used to  arrange the donors and the receivers. Several times, the donors were sent home on flights. Some foreigners were also in contact with them for kidney transplant,” she said, adding that  as per the investigation,  several cases had been registered against Dr Amit in police stations based in Maharashtra,  Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat aside from those lodged by CBI and the Enforcement Directorate.

It is also learnt from police that Rajeev Choudhary used to be assisted  by Pradeep alias Billu in the hospital affairs. Pradeep used to send receivers and donors to Delhi by his car.
