To check malnutrition grow mushroom; Gov

DANIK NATION BUREAU

The governor of Uttarakhand Krishan Kant Paul has emphasised on growing mushrooms for removing malnutrition among children and women of state. The horticulture wing of Raj Bhawan which has undertaken mushroom growing presented a basket of home grown button mushrooms to Governor on his birthday.

The Governor said that mushroom cultivation which is popular and widespread in the world is beneficial in all ways. “Commercial cultivation of mushrooms can become a source of income for people as demand for mushrooms existed all year round and various varieties of mushrooms could be cultivated throughout the year.  Within the house, mushrooms can be grown in a small room where the crop is safe from wild animals. After planting, four to five crops can be had at short intervals after 55 to 60 days’’, he said.

The governor opined that the Uttarakhand is the state where women and children are malnourished, so more attention should be given to growing mushrooms which are a good source of protein, fiber, folic acid, carbohydrates and amino acids.

He said that it did not cost much to cultivate this vegetarian food item and not much space or technical knowledge is required for it.

Dr Paul appreciated the initiative taken by the horticulture wing of Raj Bhawan for mushroom growing and directed the officials that mushroom cultivation should be highlighted during the annual Spring Festival (Basantotsav) which will be held this year on March 4 and 5  so that people were attracted towards growing mushrooms for domestic use as well as commercially
