Taking action against the rebels who are in the election fray as Independent despite the party high command’s efforts to persuade them to withdraw, BJP has suspended as many as 20 such rebels including two SHailendra Singh Rawat and Suresh Jain who have been contesting election on congress ticket for six years.
Besides, BJP has also suspended some two Ex-MLAs for contesting the election against the party’s official nominees on Congress tickets. They are Shailendra Singh Rawat and Suresh Jain. While Rawat is seeking election on Congress ticket from Yamkeshwar seat against the BJP candidate Ritu Khanduri, daughter of the former chief minister General B C Khanduri Jain is fighting the election from Roorkee constituency against the BJP candidate Pradeep Batra, again on Congress ticket. They have also suspended Diwakar Bhatt, an associate member of the party , who is in the fray against the official candidate Vinod Kandari from Deoprayag constituency.
Observers say that such steps were overdue as the actions would send a stern message to their cadres to refrain from showing sympathy with the dissident leaders I the fray. Incidentally 26 BJP dissidents had filed nomination against party official candidate. Nine of them have withdrawn their nomination after persuasion of party senior leaders.
Interestingly, most of them are in the contest against the newly inducted BJP leaders who were picked up as the party candidates. “Things are grim for the BJP. Even cracking the whip against the cadres who are commiserating with the rebels, remaining in the fray, would not yield the desired result with a large number of the party’s foot soldiers sulking over the regimented party with a distinct ideology kicking out old warhorses to placate the new entrants,” an observer says.
On the other hand, the spell of uncertainty is still dogging the Congress for Dhanaulty seat with the Mussoorie municipality chairman Manmohan Mall being in the fray with the Congress symbol allotted to him. This despite the fact that the party had withdrawn the letter allotting symbol to Mall in a bid to extend the party’s support to the PDF leader Preetam Singh Panwar, the incumbent MLA contesting as an Independent. Interestingly enough, the letter did not reach the returning officer till the last day of the withdrawal of nomination. A piquant situation has ensued as Mall is being taken as the official candidate of the party while the party is supporting Panwar.
