One of the kidneys of two donors out of four arrested by the police in connection with the kidney racket were found to be missing when the health department team conducted their medical examination on Tuesday. The ultrasound of the four donors was carried out at the associated hospital of Government Doon Medical College (GDMC). One kidney of Krishna Das, a resident of Mehendiur in West Bengal and Shekhtaj Ali of South Pargana in West Bengal was removed while both kidneys of Bhavji Bhai of Kheda district of Gujarat and Susama Banerjee of 24 Pargana district of West Bengal were found intact. The medical examination of the donors confirmed the version the police gave on Monday.
The director health services Dr LM Upreti said a team consisting of experts from GDMC and Coronation hospital was entrusted with the task of examining the hospital. The team found a dialysis machine and an operation theatre in the dental hospital. Some medicines which are used by the patients of the kidney transplant were also found from the spot. The team of doctors have submitted its report to the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Dehradun.
The finding of the team have confirmed that the Gangotri Charitable dental hospital was part of a racket involved in organ trafficking. It is suspected that the hospital was involved in the heinous crime from last seven to eight months and kidneys of more than 30 people were extracted here. For legal transplantation of kidney an elaborate protocol is needed to be followed and a donor which is one of a family member of the patient, to whom the kidney is being transplanted, is required. The donor should preferably have a blood relation with the patient. In Uttarakhand, there are only two hospitals which are having license for carrying out the kidney transplant. These hospitals are Himalayan Hospital Jolly Grant and Mahant Indiresh Hospital Dehradun.
