The UPES conducted conducted a day long “Legal Awareness-cum-Legal Aid Camp” in Gram Panchayat Kotada Santour (Nanda Ki Chowki) on the theme of Sanitary awareness programme.” Deliberations were also done on other relevant topics which included Child Marriage; Harassment and Eve-Teasing; Child Education; Domestic Violence and Pollution Control Techniques
Balbeer Prasad (Retired District Judge) who has also been the Chairman of District Consumer Dispute Redressal Forum was the Chief Guest and Avadhesh Kaushal, Chairman of RLEK graced as the Guest of Honour. Advocate Ashish Chakravarty was a special invitee to provide us with an informative legal session on the topics of this camp.
Prasad shared his thoughts on the various dimensions of domestic violence and its consequences while Sh Awadesh Kaushal deliberated on the need of legal aid camps. He strongly advocated that it should be organized by every law universities/colleges to spread legal awareness in the society. Faculty Convener, Dr. RK Chopra welcomed the dignitaries while the Faculty Coordinator, Dr. Radheshyam Prasad briefed the gathering on the details of the camp. Dr. SJ Chopra, Chancellor and Dr. Tabrez Ahmad, Director, UPES School of Law gave an insight on the various courses and special features embedded in various courses being taught in the School of Law at UPES.
Mr Arun Dhand, Director – Media Affairs in UPES informed that the legal Aid Cell in UPES has been established under the provisos of Article 39A of the constitution of India together with Rule 31 of the Bar Council of India wherein it has been made mandatory for higher educational Instititutes of Legal Studies to spread legal awareness amongst the not so literate citizens in the vicinity of their campuses and also to provide free of cost legal aid to them. He also informed that the Legal Aid Cell committee in UPES also organizes legal awareness programs among students and teachers in the government schools located in nearby villages. This is a win –win situation for all participants because the law students not only get awareness about the legal problems of rural society but also provide solutions to these problems with the assistance of the faculty members, District Legal Service Authority and District Legal Aid Centre, Dehradun and other Stakeholders.
Some ‘Nukkad Nataks’ were also played out by the students which gave messages on sanitary & health awareness, domestic violence and education of the female children. The participants of the Nukkad- Natak team included Mahima Ahuja; Manasi Singh and Raghav Gupta. Faculty members present on this occasion were Shambhavi, Yasha Sharma, Pranshu Gautam, Aparajita and Dr Azim Pathan. Prominent participants amongst the elected representatives of the villages included Ranjeet Tomar, Block Parmukh Pondha, Dehradun; Rani, Gram Pradhan, Nanda Ki Chowki, Dehradun
