In a bit to promote yoga and wellness, the Uttarakhand cabinet has approved the Uttarakhand Yoga Policy 2025, the first comprehensive yoga policy of its kind in India. Its objective is to establish Uttarakhand as a global hub for yoga, wellness, and spiritual tourism, while preserving its ancient cultural heritage.
Known as the land of sages and spiritual practices, Uttarakhand has long been a center for yoga and meditation. Places like Rishikesh, Kausani, and Champawat have attracted practitioners from across the world. The new policy builds on this legacy with a multi-dimensional vision to develop yoga as a social, educational, economic, and tourism-driven model.
The policy outlines a series of strategic actions. Yoga tourism will be actively promoted, and world-class yoga centers will be developed. Guidelines for yoga institutes will be established to ensure quality standards, and yoga will be integrated into school and college curricula. Community-based mindfulness programs tailored for various age groups and demographics will also be introduced.
By 2030, at least five new yoga hubs are to be developed in locations such as Jageshwar, Mukteshwar, Vyas Valley, Tehri Lake, and Kolidhek Lake. The government plans to make yoga services available at all AYUSH Health and Wellness Centers by March 2026. A special online yoga platform, international yoga conferences, and partnerships with 15–20 global institutions are also on the agenda.
Financial support includes grants of up to ₹20 lakh for yoga centers in hilly areas and ₹10 lakh in plains. ₹10 lakh per project will be provided for research in yoga, meditation, and naturopathy, with a total research fund of ₹1 crore. Home stays and resorts offering yoga sessions will be reimbursed ₹250 per session for instructors, with up to 20 sessions per month covered.
A Directorate of Yoga and Naturopathy will oversee implementation, regulation, and quality assurance. The state will invest ₹35 crore over the next five years, expecting to generate over 13,000 jobs, certify 2,500 yoga teachers, and employ 10,000 instructors.
This policy not only seeks to elevate Uttarakhand’s global standing in the yoga community but also aims to transform the state’s health, education, and tourism sectors.
